Things You Need to Know Before an Abortion

It’s your pregnancy, your future, and your choice. We care about you and want to empower you to make a fully informed decision. Before an abortion, there are several things you need to know.

  • Has your pregnancy been confirmed? Does this determine the cost or price of an abortion? Even if you’ve had a positive pregnancy test, you will need an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and determine how far along you are. Due to the possibility of a natural miscarriage, we also recommend verifying your HCG levels.
  • Is your pregnancy occurring in the uterus? It’s important to rule out an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy before you take any medication or before a procedure. An ectopic pregnancy can be a life-threatening condition.
  • Have you been tested for STDs? An untreated infection can cause major complications if not treated prior to an abortion. If they offer STD testing, mention that here.
  • Do you have any health conditions that could rule out a medication abortion? The abortion pill is not an option for women with certain health conditions. Learn more about any possible restrictions and potential side effects of medication abortions.
  • Do you know your Rh factor? This information can determine if you need a RhoGAM shot after an abortion is complete.

If you are unsure about the answer to any of these questions, we can help. Contact us today to make an appointment at Your Options Medical with centers in Brookline, Fall River, and Revere, MA.
