At the time of this writing, the overturning of Roe v. Wade resulted in a fragmented map of the U.S., where each state has its own regulations on abortion access. Other states have comparatively relaxed abortion access but have limitations banning abortion after the point of viability, which means that a fetus can exist outside of the womb.
Is Abortion Legal in the State of Massachusetts?
In Massachusetts, abortion is legal up to the point of viability which is currently understood as 24 weeks. There are exceptions allowed later in the pregnancy, including if the pregnancy poses a life-threatening risk to the physical or mental health of the woman. Parents must also be notified if the pregnant woman is under 16.
Where is Abortion Banned?
Many states are still deciding how abortion will be regulated. Some states are taking it to the ballot box, or it is being played out in the court system. Currently, here are the states that have banned abortion, with no exception for rape or incest: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas.
Other states have limited abortion access but may have gestational limits, such as the 15-week ban in Florida.
Next Steps
If you are considering an elective abortion in Massachusetts, whether you are a resident or are considering traveling from out of state, the best medical practice is to have a pre-abortion screening which includes an ultrasound.
Ultrasounds can give information such as assessing for indicators of miscarriage, pregnancy viability, how far along you are (gestational age), and if the pregnancy is located in the uterus (non-ectopic). All of this information can better protect your health and safety as well as determine your eligibility for surgical abortion or the abortion pill.
At Your Options Medical, we provide a safe, compassionate environment for you to gain information, discuss your options with our trained staff, and receive an ultrasound to empower you with the information you need to make your decision.
