Is it Possible to Have a False-Negative Pregnancy Test Result?

False-Negative Pregnancy Tests

At Your Options Medical, we have found that when many of our patients have a negative pregnancy test result, they assume they are not pregnant. However, this is not always the case. False negative pregnancy tests do occur. Here is how it works:

A urine pregnancy test detects the hormone called hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin). This is the hormone your body produces during pregnancy. When urine is being tested for the presence of this hCG hormone and a woman is pregnant, the result of the pregnancy test should read positive. However, there are a few reasons a pregnancy test can give a false test result including the following:

  • In early pregnancy, the hCG hormone levels may be too low for a pregnancy test to detect. The earliest time to test for an accurate result is 7-10 days after a missed period.
  • The best time of day to take a pregnancy test is first thing in the morning when a woman’s urine is highly concentrated. Because urine may be less concentrated later in the day, the test may not be able to detect the hCG hormone.
  • If you have had a negative pregnancy test, but are experiencing pregnancy-like symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, tiredness, loss of appetite, etc. it is always best to contact your doctor to access for causes unrelated to pregnancy.
  • There is always the possibility of human error when performing home pregnancy tests. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Most pregnancy tests require you to let the test set for 3-5 minutes. If the test is left beyond the recommended set time, this could produce a false test result.
  • If you had a tubal ligation (i.e. tubes tied), are experiencing pregnancy-like symptoms, and test negative on a pregnancy test, contact your medical doctor to assess for causes unrelated to pregnancy.

  1. So I had unprotected sex couple days ago and my cycle was suppose come on yesterday it haven’t I took a test it say negative but I been throwing up, stomach hurts n lower back should I wait to test again?

    1. Hi Val,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical.
To answer your questions, typically we recommend the best time to take a pregnancy test is one week after you are due to start your period. Also, the best time to test is first thing in the morning. If the test reads negative, we recommend testing again in about one week. You may want to consider requesting a blood pregnancy test from your primary care physician or OB/GYN as these tests are more accurate at detecting pregnancy than urine tests. This way if pregnancy is ruled out, your doctor can further assess your symptoms. If symptoms persist and pregnancy tests continue to be negative, seek medical attention.
At Your Options Medical, we provide free telehealth calls with a nurse, pregnancy testing, ultrasound, and pregnancy options counseling. To schedule your confidential appointment, please call or text 508-251-9022.

  2. Last January 14 I had a blood pregnancy test and the result was positive. Few days later, I had heavy bleeding with clots for 1 and a half day and for 2 days light bleeding that was pink and cannot even fill the pad. On the same day january 18, I had transvaginal ultrasound the doctor says no gestational sac and advised me to repeat ultrasound one week after because maybe it is too early for the sac to show up. January 26 a day before my repeat utz, I had my blood pregnancy test and the result was negative but I am experiencing symptoms like nausea, frequest urination and little breast tenderness. Am I pregnant?

    1. Hi Jerica,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical.
Unfortunately, I cannot diagnose if you are pregnant or not. It sounds like you may have experienced a miscarriage. If you think you may still be pregnant, you could request another blood pregnancy test from your primary care physician or OB/GYN as these tests are more accurate at detecting pregnancy than urine tests. This way if pregnancy is ruled out, your doctor can further assess your symptoms. If symptoms persist and pregnancy tests continue to be negative, seek medical attention.

  6. Hi, I had a urine pregnancy test and the result is positive, but blood test result is negative
I went further for a scan I was told that I’m one month and three days gone, but on confirmation, the result is negative that my period will start in four days time which I know. But I’m feeling weakness and vomiting! Could I be pregnancy?

    1. Hi Peter,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical.
To answer your question, it is possible you might be pregnant. There is a possibility you may be experiencing a miscarriage which is why a blood test could be showing a negative result. If symptoms persist, you could repeat urine and blood pregnancy testing in 1-2 weeks to rule out pregnancy or any other medical condition.

  7. Hi, I’ve experienced a 8 day period with heavy bleeding and big clots and intense pain. After a week I started spotting. The spotting stopped after a couple of hours. I took a test the next day and it came out negative. Could I have been pregnant?

    1. Hi Skye,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical.
There is no way to diagnose you. There are several factors that can affect a woman’s period including stress, medication, weight loss or gain, etc. It is possible that you may have been pregnant and experienced a miscarriage. However, if that was the case the pregnancy test likely would have had a positive result as the hCG (pregnancy hormone) probably still would have been in your system.
If symptoms persist and pregnancy tests continue to be negative, seek medical attention.

  9. Hi,

I birthed a baby in early October. I have been breast feeding full time since then. I did get a light period December 24th, and then one on Jan 23rd for 1-2 days. I am starting to experience pregnancy symptoms such as, body aches – back and tailbone, I threw up early in the morning and did not get sick the rest of the day or a few days after. I have been nauseous. I took 2 pregnancy tests Feb 2nd and Feb 3rd and both were negative. Am I pregnant or could be early for the negative tests?

    1. Hi Cassandra,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical.
Congratulations on the birth of your new baby this past autumn!
To answer your question, I cannot diagnose you. It is possible that you might be pregnant but early. It is possible to become pregnant even while breastfeeding. Since your cycle may be off due to giving birth, you may want to try taking a pregnancy test again in one or two weeks.
