Is it Possible to Have a False-Negative Pregnancy Test Result?

False-Negative Pregnancy Tests

At Your Options Medical, we have found that when many of our patients have a negative pregnancy test result, they assume they are not pregnant. However, this is not always the case. False negative pregnancy tests do occur. Here is how it works:

A urine pregnancy test detects the hormone called hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin). This is the hormone your body produces during pregnancy. When urine is being tested for the presence of this hCG hormone and a woman is pregnant, the result of the pregnancy test should read positive. However, there are a few reasons a pregnancy test can give a false test result including the following:

  • In early pregnancy, the hCG hormone levels may be too low for a pregnancy test to detect. The earliest time to test for an accurate result is 7-10 days after a missed period.
  • The best time of day to take a pregnancy test is first thing in the morning when a woman’s urine is highly concentrated. Because urine may be less concentrated later in the day, the test may not be able to detect the hCG hormone.
  • If you have had a negative pregnancy test, but are experiencing pregnancy-like symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, tiredness, loss of appetite, etc. it is always best to contact your doctor to access for causes unrelated to pregnancy.
  • There is always the possibility of human error when performing home pregnancy tests. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Most pregnancy tests require you to let the test set for 3-5 minutes. If the test is left beyond the recommended set time, this could produce a false test result.
  • If you had a tubal ligation (i.e. tubes tied), are experiencing pregnancy-like symptoms, and test negative on a pregnancy test, contact your medical doctor to assess for causes unrelated to pregnancy.

  1. Hello
I had my period from Sep 13-19, the spotting on September 28-29 I had positive tests at home- October 9 I went to see a doctor on October 13 to get a blood test and it came back negative. I still don’t have my period. Can I still be pregnant?

    1. Hello Katherine,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your question.
With the dates you provide, as of October 13, you had not missed a period yet. It could have been too early to detect pregnancy.
I would take a home pregnancy test. If it is negative, you can repeat in a week. If it is still negative, you can ask for a repeat blood pregnancy test. If this is still negative, and you haven’t started your period, you can follow up with your doctor.
At Your Options Medical, we provide free pregnancy testing, ultrasound, and pregnancy options counseling. To schedule your confidential appointment, please call or text 508-251-9022.

  2. Hi I started birth control about September 21st / it’s my first time having it and I started it a few days before my period was due so it came anyways but it was so so heavy compared to usual.. and then I missed 2 or 3 pills and on the 30th October 2021 I think I had a break through bleeding

So now fast forward to today- since then I’ve took it consistently but for the last two weeks especially this last week I’ve been feeling extreme nausea/ no vomiting – food aversions like I can smell it and gag

I had unprotected sex on 30th august, 8th September,
26th september and 15th and 17th of October

I took a pregnancy test last Friday but it came back negative

But a lot of the symptoms for pregnancy are occurring such as metallic taste in mouth, weird bloating, food aversions, loss of appetite, nausea in the morning and it passes in evening time

Because I tracked a second period in flo when it was break through bleeding… and it hasn’t happened the second time

The app says my period is due in 8 days but it could be wrong

However the test was negative last week and idk if it’s bc the hormone levels are low or something

    1. Hello Deajahnay,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your question.
I can understand your concern as it seems that your period dates, starting birth control, having unprotected sex and experiencing pregnancy symptoms with a negative test result would be confusing. At this point I would suggest consulting with your gynecologist who could order a blood pregnancy test as this is a more accurate method of pregnancy testing compared to urine tests. If this is negative, then you can consult your doctor as to the cause of these symptoms you are having.

  4. Hello, I have so much going through my head I just want peace of mind. I had my period on the 1.09.21 until 4.09.21 I went off birth control at the end of last year. My periods have been around 33 days but I did have two periods that were around 40 days but my last two were 33 days. I was due for my period around 2.10.21. I tested on the 9.10.21 and what I thought was a line ( think it was an evap line) and have tested negative ever since. I felt I ovulated on the 25.09.21, and we had unprotected sex a few times that period. I went to the drs and got a blood test on the 22.19.21 which she stated the HCG levels would be to low for what I would be. I’m still testing negative but I still don’t have my period and I have symptoms.. I feel nausea, so fatigued, metallic tasted, nipples can sometimes be tender but rarely and the bloat is extremely bad and water rententon as well as I have real food aversions. Do you think I would be pregnant I would be 8 weeks from period or about 6 weeks from oval date.

    1. Hello Natasha,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your concern.
A blood pregnancy test is a pretty accurate test for determining pregnancy and how far along you are if it is positive. I would consult with your doctor about the appropriateness of another blood pregnancy test and the continued absence of your period and the symptoms you are having.

    1. Hello Jennifer,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your question.
There are a number of factors that can affect your period. Stress, medications, illness, diet and exercise are some of those factors. However, it is possible that that you could be pregnant. I would suggest that you get a blood pregnancy test from you doctor. If you still get negative results, you can then discuss the absence of menstruation with your doctor.

  6. My cycle is around 30 days I had my period from September 23-27 roughly…I haven’t had my period this month and I’m having serious off and on nausea, bloating , fatigue (etc.) slight cramping in my lower abdomen as if it’s a stretching ache..took a pregnancy test around mid-day (was to impatient) and it was invalid so I am unclear still..should I just go ahead and buy another one? Are there any chances I’m pregnant, or is it normal ? I’m not having tender breast or any other symptoms other then frequent urination.. should I wait another week before I get another one? The month of October is about over and still no sign of Aunt Flo

    1. Hello Noel,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your question.
I’m not sure what you mean by an “invalid” test. I am thinking you mean a negative test. In any event you can repeat the pregnancy test in a week or so, using your first urine of the morning. If this is still negative, you can ask your doctor to order a blood pregnancy test as they are more definitive on detecting pregnancy. If this is still negative, you can then consult with your doctor concerning the symptoms you are having and the absence of your period.

  7. Hello,

I had what I’m pretty sure was implantation bleeding from 10/20 to 10/25. Light spotting, some cramping. Comes and go nothing consistent. During those days my breast were sore and it almost felt like I had a cold. I was supposed to start my period 10/25 but it has yet to come. I’ve had only negative tests and I feel normal now but no period. I had a miscarriage back in April but my periods since then have been regular as it always had been, right on the clock. Could I still be pregnant and just testing too early? When should I get a blood test done?

    1. Hello Pazao,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your questions.
It is possible that you are testing too early with the dates you have given. I would suggest repeating a home pregnancy test in a week or so, using your first urine of the morning, if you do not start your period. If it still comes back negative, you could then ask your doctor to order a blood pregnancy test. This would give you a more accurate result. If the result is negative, you can then discuss your situation with your doctor.

    1. Hello Alyssa,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your concern.
With the information you have provided it would seem that you could be too early to get an accurate reading and it could be appropriate to wait until you have missed your period to take a home pregnancy test.
