Is it Possible to Have a False-Negative Pregnancy Test Result?

False-Negative Pregnancy Tests

At Your Options Medical, we have found that when many of our patients have a negative pregnancy test result, they assume they are not pregnant. However, this is not always the case. False negative pregnancy tests do occur. Here is how it works:

A urine pregnancy test detects the hormone called hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin). This is the hormone your body produces during pregnancy. When urine is being tested for the presence of this hCG hormone and a woman is pregnant, the result of the pregnancy test should read positive. However, there are a few reasons a pregnancy test can give a false test result including the following:

  • In early pregnancy, the hCG hormone levels may be too low for a pregnancy test to detect. The earliest time to test for an accurate result is 7-10 days after a missed period.
  • The best time of day to take a pregnancy test is first thing in the morning when a woman’s urine is highly concentrated. Because urine may be less concentrated later in the day, the test may not be able to detect the hCG hormone.
  • If you have had a negative pregnancy test, but are experiencing pregnancy-like symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, tiredness, loss of appetite, etc. it is always best to contact your doctor to access for causes unrelated to pregnancy.
  • There is always the possibility of human error when performing home pregnancy tests. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Most pregnancy tests require you to let the test set for 3-5 minutes. If the test is left beyond the recommended set time, this could produce a false test result.
  • If you had a tubal ligation (i.e. tubes tied), are experiencing pregnancy-like symptoms, and test negative on a pregnancy test, contact your medical doctor to assess for causes unrelated to pregnancy.

    1. Hi Niyahonna,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
Typically we recommend the best time to take a pregnancy test is one week after you are due to start your period. Also, the best time to test is first thing in the morning. If the test reads negative, we recommend testing again in about one week. You may want to consider requesting a blood pregnancy test from your primary care physician or OB/GYN as these tests are more accurate at detecting pregnancy than urine tests. This way if pregnancy is ruled out, your doctor can further assess your symptoms. If symptoms persist and pregnancy tests continue to be negative, seek medical attention.
At Your Options Medical, we provide free pregnancy testing, ultrasound, and pregnancy options counseling. To schedule your confidential appointment, please call or text 508-251-9022.

  3. Hello, I have not had a period since July and have pregnancy symptoms but negative tests. I have had a couple of very faint lines on 2 tests but the rest are negative. Doctor is refusing to see me face to face but I am worried as I do not know what is going on.

    1. Hi Natalie,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
At this point, it would probably be best to get a blood pregnancy test as these tests are more accurate at detecting pregnancy than urine tests. If your primary care doctor won’t see you, you could request this blood test from your OB/GYN. If symptoms persist and pregnancy tests continue to be negative, seek medical attention. I hope this helps.

  4. My tubes were tied a year ago. My period is three days late when it has been regular. The only symptoms I am having is nausea food intolerances dizzyness and extreme moodiness. No cramps or any regular signs of my period. I have taken two tests one the day of my period and one today. Is it possible or am I crazy?

    1. Hi Carolyn,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
To answer your question: there is a small possibility that you might be pregnant. You may want to consider requesting a blood pregnancy test from your primary care physician or OB/GYN as these tests are more accurate at detecting pregnancy than urine tests. 5. I had a miscarriage at 5w3d Sept 3. After everything passed, we started trying again immediately. But then stopped and thought it was best to wait. I had a OB appt Sept 28, had an ultrasound and urine test both negative. She told me either I was about to ovulate or get my period. Well here we are Oct 9 and yesterday a home urine pregnancy test had a strong positive line almost instantly. I don’t know how to calculate my EDD.

    1. Hi Ashley,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
So typically an EDD is based off of your last period. If you have not had a period, you would have to base your EDD off your estimated time of ovulation. So if you ovulated around 9/28/21 your EDD would probably be somewhere around 6/25/22.
You may want to consider requesting a blood pregnancy test from your primary care physician or OB/GYN as these tests are more accurate at detecting pregnancy than urine tests.

  6. So Ive been having pregnancy symptoms for the last couple of Days. And a lot of cramping and my period isn’t due for another 15 days… Is that a sign of pregnancy.. I’m honestly not sure.

    1. Hi Chase,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
To answer your question, yes cramping can be a symptom early pregnancy. Common early pregnancy symptoms include: cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting, swollen/tender breasts, tiredness, changes in appetite, and frequent urination.
Typically, the best time to take a pregnancy test is one week after you are due to start your period. Also, the best time to test is first thing in the morning. If the test reads negative, we recommend testing again in about one week. If you receive a negative result at this point, you could request a blood pregnancy test from your primary care physician or OB/GYN as these tests are more accurate at detecting pregnancy than urine tests. 7. Hello,

The first day of my last period was on August 30th. Haven’t gotten a period after then but noticed some off and on light spotting and cramps since 4th of October till today12th of October. Carried out two home pregnancy urine tests within two days and they turned out positive. An ultrasound scan showed no baby, and a blood test at the hospital showed negative. What could be wrong? Am I pregnant or not? The only signs I’m having are the cramps, bleeding and full/tender breasts.

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Ellie,
      Thank you for your inquiry.
First, I am so sorry. I am sure this is a frustrating. It is possible you might have had a miscarriage, but I cannot diagnose. At this point, you will probably just have to wait a few weeks and then test again to see if the result is positive or negative. I am sorry for the discomfort you are experiencing. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out.

  8. Hi
The first day of my last period was September 10 and I was expected to see my period on the 10th of this month which is October but till now I haven’t and the first test I did was when I was 1day late ,I did another test today but wasn’t my early morning urine which also came out negative. My cramps has gone from severe to light cramping and my breast are so tender, full and a lil bit sore.im TTC but changed from pregnant care conception to seven sea conception, I’ve never missed my period since my last conception which was oct 2020 but had a miscarriage in December 2020 but I’m now 6days late with negative results. I’m confused

    1. Hello Genevieve,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your question.
First, my deepest sympathies for you and your family’s loss.
Most home pregnancy tests can be accurate when taken 1 week after a missed period. I would suggest you take another home pregnancy test, using the first urine of the day. If this is negative, you can repeat it in a week, if you don’t start your period. If you are still getting negative results, call your doctor for a consult and discuss the appropriateness of a pregnancy blood test, as they are more accurate. If this is negative, then you can follow up with your doctor about your symptoms.

  9. I had my tubes tied June of 2020 and was suppose to get my period October 3rd and I’ve never had it since , 17 days late ? Is that normal because I have all pregnancy symptoms and very heart sick , dizziness very thirsty and cranky and not hungry

    1. Hello Katherine,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your concern.
I am wondering if you have taken a home pregnancy test? This would be your first step. If it is positive you would want to call your obstetrician to let them know your situation. If it is negative and your symptoms persist, I suggest you consult with your primary care physician so you can determine the cause of your symptoms. You mention being “Heart sick” and dizziness, I’m not sure what you mean by this, but I urge you to contact medical help immediately or go the nearest emergency room if you are having chest pain, heart pain, or shortness of breath.

  10. Hello
I had my period from Sep 13-19, I had positive tests at home. I went to see a doctor on October 13 to get a blood test and it came back negative. I still don’t have my period.

    1. Hello Katherine,
Thank you for reaching out to Your Options Medical with your question.
With the dates you provide, as of October 13, you had not missed a period yet. It could have been too early to detect pregnancy.
I would take a home pregnancy test. If it is negative, you can repeat in a week. If it is still negative, you can ask for a repeat blood pregnancy test. If this is still negative, and you haven’t started your period, you can follow up with your doctor.
At Your Options Medical, we provide free pregnancy testing, ultrasound, and pregnancy options counseling. To schedule your confidential appointment, please call or text 508-251-9022.
